Lung cancer is a disease of abnormal cells multiplying and growing into a tumor. Whenever a notable change in the morphological and structural patterns of the cells occurs, cancer is reported. Cancer cells can be carried away from the lungs in blood, or lymph fluid that surrounds lung tissue. Usually blood is used as a medium to transmit the cancerous tissues or cells within the body. Lymph flows through lymphatic vessels, which drain into lymph nodes located in the lungs and in the center of the chest. Lung cancer often spreads toward the center of the chest because the natural flow of lymph out of the lungs is toward the center of the chest. Thus, it causes a severe and uncontrollable chest pain due to the abnormal accumulation of pleural fluid within the lung and chest cavity. Metastasis occurs when a cancer cell leaves the site where it began and moves into a lymph node or to another part of the body through the bloodstream. Metastasis results in abnormal cancer growth within the entire body.

With the recent advancements in computer field, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has become an auxiliary diagnosis tool, especially in diseases that cannot be diagnosed efficiently. To improve the accuracy and efficiency of CT screening programs for the detection of early-stage lung cancer, a number of research projects, such as texture analysis and image segmentation, have been done to assist radiologists and oncologists in diagnosing lung cancer. However, achieving this early detection of lung cancer is not an easy task. A Curvelet transform is used to extract texture features of pulmonary nodules in CT image and to support the vector machine to establish prediction model of small solitary pulmonary nodules in order to promote the ratio of detection and diagnosis of early-stage lung cancer. The CT images are collected and curvelet transforms are used to extract the textural features to establish support vector machine prediction model. Based on the texture features extracted from Curvelet transform, support vector machine prediction model is sensitive to lung cancer, which can promote the rate of diagnosis for early-stage lung cancer to certain extent.

Radiotherapy for Mesothelioma Disease

In case of reducing the size of chest wall fibres and dispatching the localized pain in more than half the infected patients the oncologists prefer radiotherapy. Radiotherapy does not produce a partial response of intra-thoracic disease and it has not been found to improve the survival of the mesothelioma affected patients. This lack of intra-thoracic response of radiotherapy results in uncertainty for choosing the amount of the radiation required for treatment procedures. As a recent advancement the sophisticated radiotherapy results in computerized planning techniques. With the help of computerized planning techniques of radiotherapy the oncologists can target all the tumor cells without causing any damage to the normal neighboring structures. Generally radiotherapy is advised in order to drain sites and to reduce the frequency or proliferation of tumor seeding. The radiation therapy is generally admitted as a better treatment procedure when compared to other procedures because of low-toxicity. Normally within 4 weeks or 15 days of the biopsy or drainage procedure, radiation therapy is preferred, and all sites, which have been used, should be irradiated to avoid spreading of mesothelial disease within the body.

The Treatment procedures of mesothelioma include surgery. Surgery is generally advised by the doctors at the early stage of the disease. Mesothelioma is caused by Simian-40 or Polio virus. These viruses have the capacity to proliferate continuously within the human body. They rapidly divide into different cells and transmit through the blood stream. Mesothelioma occurs generally on aged people, due to the high latency period of the disease more than 15-20 years. The early detection of the disease is quite difficult due to the rare symptoms and uncertainty detection procedures. Surgery is used to remove the cancerous fibres completely from the body and therefore they guarantee the life of the patient. Cytoreductive surgery is done at the stage 1 of the disease. Generally the disease is characterized by pleural effusion i.e. accumulation of excessive fluids around the lung and chest cavity, resulting in infiltration and resistant to blood flow. Video-assisted thoracoscopy is used in case of inserting chest needles into the body cavity, while removing pleural fluids. Pleurodesis is used to obtain a better care and improvised quality of patients’ life.

In the past years it was considered that mesothelioma is incurable, due to the high latency period of the disease and uncommon symptoms. Patients generally go for palliative or supportive treatments to extend their life span. In the recent years, after a number of researches, it has been proved that the patient’s life can be saved by conscious treatment procedures. The survival rate of the disease is meager and oncologists are trying a lot to improve the rate. The doctors prefer improvised anti-cancerous chemotherapy or targeted therapy. The British Thoracic Society Statement holds a report that the recent palliative treatments used to diagnose mesothelioma are extemporized. Extra-pleural pneumonectomy is a common treatment procedure preferred at the later stages of the disease. This treatment is used to collect or remove the excess pleural fluid from the lung cavity. Trimodality therapy normally involves surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Sometimes after considering the patient’s age and stage of the disease the doctors go for other systemic treatment procedures. Targeted therapies are used to destroy the cancerous cells. Pain relief is also admitted due to the uncontrollable thoracic pain during pleural mesothelioma.
